Flu vaccine available at the Southern Nevada Health District
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
September 24, 2018
LAS VEGAS – If it’s not too early to order a pumpkin spice latte, then it’s not too early to protect yourself and your family from the flu! The beginning of fall means that flu season is just around the corner, and the Southern Nevada Health District is offering the injectable quadrivalent (four-strain) flu vaccine as well as the high-dose vaccine for people age 65 and older at its public health centers. Cost of the flu vaccine is covered by most insurance with no copay. For more information, visit the Immunization Program’s Flu Vaccine Clinic page or call the clinic at (702) 759-0850.
The Health District and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend routine annual flu vaccine for people age 6 months and older without any contraindications. Flu shots are especially recommended for people who are at a higher risk of flu complications including pregnant women; people over the age of 65; or anyone with a chronic medical condition like heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, or respiratory conditions. Because babies younger than 6 months old cannot receive a flu vaccine, people who care for them should also be vaccinated.
There are several different flu vaccines approved for use in the United States for the 2018-2019 season. Any licensed, recommended, and age-appropriate vaccine can be used, and this includes individuals with a history of egg allergy of any severity. Anyone who has questions about which flu vaccine is appropriate should contact his or her health care provider. For additional information about flu shot recommendations, visit the CDC’s Get Vaccinated page.
