FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
March 12, 2019

LAS VEGAS – As part of Diabetes Alert Month, the Southern Nevada Health District, the Alliance Against Diabetes/Unión Contra la Diabetes, Visión y Compromiso, and other community partners are hosting the annual Celebrating Your Health/Celebrando Tu Salud health fair from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 23 at the Alliance Against Diabetes, 3930 E. Patrick Lane, Las Vegas, Nev. 89120. The event will feature free blood glucose screenings as well as other health screenings, diabetes and health resources, social services referrals, entertainment, and more. Celebrating Your Health is a tobacco-free event, and free resources will be available to assist community members to quit smoking.  For additional information, visit the Health District’s Spanish-language Viva Saludable.org website.

Celebrating Your Health is an opportunity to provide prediabetes and diabetes education and screenings to Southern Nevadans, especially in the Hispanic/Latino community. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that approximately 50 percent of Hispanics will develop type 2 diabetes in their lifetime and that approximately 40 percent of all adults are at risk of developing the disease. The good news is that if people make simple lifestyle changes, they can cut their type 2 diabetes risk in half.

The Health District’s Office of Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion offers a free, online diabetes prevention program developed specifically for people with prediabetes or who are at risk for type 2 diabetes. The program is available in English and Spanish. It teaches participants about risk factors and how to make simple lifestyle changes. Participants can sign up for the Road to Diabetes Prevention program on the Get Healthy Clark County or the Viva Saludable’s Programa de Prevención de Diabetes en línea webpages.

Self-management tips and resources are available for people with diabetes in English on the Get Healthy Clark County website and in Spanish on the Viva Saludable website.

The Southern Nevada Health District’s Get Healthy Clark County and Viva Saludable websites also offer free, online programs that can help with nutritional choices and physical activity for everyone. Online programs include the Nutrition Challenge, Walk Around Nevada, smoking cessation resources, and tools to support a healthier lifestyle.

The Southern Nevada Health District serves as the local public health authority for Clark County, Boulder City, Henderson, Las Vegas, Mesquite and North Las Vegas. The agency safeguards the public health of the community’s residents and visitors through innovative programs, regulations, and initiatives focused on protecting and promoting their health and well-being.
