The Health District commends CVS Caremark for recent decision

LAS VEGAS – The Southern Nevada Health District commends CVS Caremark Corp. for its recent decision to end the sale of tobacco products at its stores throughout the United States, including Clark County.

Tobacco use continues to be responsible for more than 480,000 deaths annually in the United States and results in more than 5.6 million years of potential life lost. In Nevada alone, tobacco use results in approximately $565 million in health care costs each year.

“At the local level, the health district works with members of the public to support their efforts to adopt tobacco-free lifestyles and with community partners on policy initiatives that limit access to tobacco products and promote smoke-free spaces,” said Dr. Joe Iser, chief health officer for the Southern Nevada Health District. “In this regard, CVS has shown tremendous leadership for the business community and we hope the organization will be a role model for others with a health-centered mission.”
