What is the purpose of the Hepatitis C Exposure Registry?
The health district’s Hepatitis C Exposure Registry will assist us in gathering additional information related to patients at the Desert Shadow clinic and the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada. Patients of these clinics are encouraged to enroll and provide the health district with information about heir exposure.
The registry will assist in identifying patients who had procedures at the clinics, including those infected with the hepatitis C virus and to further investigate the extent of the outbreak in the community.
When will I get the letter informing me about the registry?
We are not certain if the list from the Desert Shadow clinic on Burnham Avenue is complete. If you were a patient at the clinic and would like to enroll in the registry, you can download enrollment forms from the health district’s website.
If you were a patient of the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada on Shadow Lane it is important to remember that the clinic did not provide the health district with a complete patient list. If you did not receive an initial notification letter, it is likely that your name was not on the original list we received from the clinic in February. If you had a procedure at the Shadow Lane clinic you are encouraged to enroll in the registry.
What will the registry do for me?
Providing information for the registry will allow the health district to conduct a more comprehensive investigation and additional information for patients. If you have been infected with hepatitis C, it will allow us to provide you with the classification of your exposure.
Who will have access to my information?
Your information is protected by state and federal laws. The information cannot be released to other persons without your consent and cannot be released pursuant to any subpoena, search warrant or discovery proceeding.
How will the registry be used?
The registry will be used by the health district’s epidemiology department investigators to determine the extent of the hepatitis C outbreak in the community.
The registry will assist the health district to identify patients that we have not been able to locate during the outbreak and can assist in the continuing investigation as information becomes available.
I want to put my name on the registry.
Patients of the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada or the Desert Shadow Endoscopy Center on Burnham Avenue are encouraged to enroll in the registry. Patients are asked to fill out a form to enroll and provide the health district with any additional information such as lab tests, procedure information or any documents related to their procedure.
What do I need to provide to be on the registry?
An enrollment form is available to download as well as instructions about what is needed. The health district will need to verify that you were a patient at the clinics. You will need to provide contact information and preferably the date of your procedure or any other appropriate information about your testing.
Why do I have to provide so much paperwork to be included on the registry?
The health district is requesting information that will assist in the ongoing investigation and may help to determine the extent of the outbreak. With accurate information, the health district investigators can verify patient procedures, risk factors, to get an accurate picture of the outbreak.
As with all health district investigations, patient information is confidential. Information provided by patients will also assist health district investigators to classify a patient’s potential exposure at the clinic.
I would like someone to contact me regarding the registry. I have information that I would like to add.
The information that you are providing by enrolling in the registry is crucial to our continuing investigation and it is greatly appreciated. The outbreak investigation team reviews all of the information submitted to the registry to identify any clusters of illness or other clues that could help determine the extent of the outbreak in the community as well as potential sources of infection. If we identify such a cluster, we would do further investigation and follow up.
If I was a patient and tested negative, can I be part of the registry?
Yes. The Hepatitis C Exposure Registry is available to patients of the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada between March 2004 and January 11, 2008 as well as patients of the Desert Shadow Endoscopy Center during the two years it was in operation.
If I was a patient and tested negative, why should I be part of the registry?
The health district encourages patients to enroll in the Hepatitis C Exposure Registry even if they have tested negative. With patients who have tested negative and positive enrolled in the registry, the health district’s investigators have a better idea of what happened at the clinic and when. It is an opportunity for patients to participate in the process and provide valuable information for the investigation.
If I was a patient at either clinic, is it required that I participate in the registry?
No. Enrollment in the Hepatitis C Exposure registry is voluntary, although the health district does encourage patients of the clinics to enroll.
I was a patient at another clinic; may I enroll in the registry?
The purpose of the registry is to track patients of the two clinics where documented disease transmission occurred.
