First flu-related deaths reported in Clark County
B2019-04-26T11:26:13-07:00The Southern Nevada Health District is reporting the 2018-2019 season's first flu-related deaths. One of the reported deaths occurred in a child in the 0-4 age group. The two adult patients who died were in the 50-64 age group.

Southern Nevada Health District to offer Express Testing for National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

This year the Southern Nevada Health District will commemorate the day by offering free Express Testing for HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia at its Sexual Health Clinic between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

B2019-04-26T11:40:59-07:00As part of Diabetes Alert Month, the Southern Nevada Health District, the Alliance Against Diabetes/Unión Contra la Diabetes, Visión y Compromiso, and other community partners are hosting the annual Celebrating Your Health/Celebrando Tu Salud health fair from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 23 at the Alliance Against Diabetes, 3930 E. Patrick Lane, Las Vegas, Nev. 89120. The event will feature free blood glucose screenings as well as other health screenings, diabetes and health resources, social services referrals, entertainment, and more. Celebrating Your Health is a tobacco-free event, and free resources will be available to assist community members to quit smoking. Southern Nevada Health District hosts Nevada County Health Rankings briefing

Measles case in Clark County

The patient is an international visitor and the potential Las Vegas exposure occurred between Saturday, March 9 and Monday, March 11. The patient’s immunization status is unknown. The Health District is notifying individuals who might have had contact with this patient and will not be releasing any additional information about the patient.

2019 County Health Rankings Released

The County Health Rankings are released each year by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute (UWPHI). Update: Durango High School Tuberculosis Contact Investigation

‘Tis the Season – Mosquito Season, that is!
B2019-10-21T14:31:30-07:00LAS VEGAS – As temperatures increase in Southern Nevada, so does mosquito activity, and so do the activities of the Southern Nevada Health District’s Mosquito Surveillance Program staff. The Health District is reminding residents to “Fight the Bite” this season by eliminating standing water around their home, preventing mosquito bites by wearing an EPA-registered repellent, and reporting mosquito activity to the Health District by calling (702) 759-1633.
Measles Update – Travelers urged to protect themselves
B2019-04-29T15:54:29-07:00The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is reporting 465 cases of measles in 19 states so far this year. This is the second-greatest number of cases reported in the United States since measles was eliminated in 2000. The Southern Nevada Health District reported two confirmed cases of measles in Clark County the last six months. The CDC is urging people to protect themselves before traveling, especially to international destinations.
Health District working with community partners to address high rates of syphilis and congenital syphilis in Southern Nevada
B2019-04-29T15:51:23-07:00In 2017, Clark County ranked first in the nation for rates of primary and secondary syphilis and second for rates of congenital syphilis. Cases of congenital syphilis have been steadily increasing at an alarming rate in Clark County. In 2016, there were nine reported cases, in 2017 there were 20 cases, and in 2018 there were 24 cases of congenital syphilis in Clark County.

Health District declares acute hepatitis A outbreak in Clark County

Between January 1, 2019, and May 31, 2019, there have been 37 reported acute hepatitis A cases, compared to 17 reported cases in 2018, no reported case in 2017, and six reported cases in 2016 during the same period.

One individual is a male over the age of 50 who had the non-neuroinvasive form of the illness, and another is a female under the age of 50 who had the neuroinvasive form of the illness. The third individual is a male over the age of 50 who was asymptomatic and is classified as a presumptively viremic donor (PVD).
West Nile Virus Update

The individual is a female under the age of 50 who has the neuroinvasive form of the illness. West Nile virus is considered endemic in Clark County, having first been identified in 2005. This new case is a reminder to the public of the importance of preventing mosquito bites and eliminating breeding sources around their homes.

Hepatitis A outbreak cases increase to 83 in Southern Nevada
Cory Burgess2019-08-29T13:41:10-07:00In June, the Southern Nevada Health District announced Clark County was experiencing an outbreak of hepatitis A cases. Since November 2018, the Health District has reported 83 outbreak-associated cases of hepatitis A. In the past few years total cases reported have been significantly lower: 39 cases reported in 2018; 13 cases in 2017; and six reported cases in 2016. People who are at increased risk for infection include people who use drugs and those experiencing homelessness. Of the reported cases, more than 92 percent were people who used drugs (injection or non-injection), and more than 80 percent were among people experiencing homelessness. Weekly hepatitis A outbreak updates will be available on the Health District website at www.SNHD.info/hep-a-control.
Health District reports potential measles exposure
B2019-08-15T11:00:24-07:00LAS VEGAS - The Southern Nevada Health District is informing individuals and the public who were at different locations listed below that they might have been exposed to a person who was confirmed to have a case of measles. Because measles can be highly contagious, the Health District is advising people who may have been exposed to review their immunization status and contact their health care providers if they are not fully immunized against measles or have not already had the disease. This measles case was reported in a visitor. There have been no additional cases reported in Clark County residents.

Twenty-eight cases of West Nile virus reported
B2019-10-21T14:11:40-07:00The Southern Nevada Health District is declaring an outbreak of West Nile virus in Clark County after receiving reports of 28 cases of the disease in humans – the highest case count in a season since the virus was first detected in the state in 2004. In addition to the high number of cases, 17 of the 28 reported cases have had the more serious neuroinvasive form of the illness.

The Southern Nevada Health District is reporting 10 additional West Nile virus cases for a total of 29 cases. The individuals are nine males, six of whom are over the age 50, three under the age of 50; and one female over the age of 50. Seven of the new cases have the more serious neuroinvasive form of the illness.
Southern Nevada Harm Reduction Alliance hosts its annual International Overdose Awareness Day event, Aug. 29
B2019-08-29T09:53:25-07:00In 2017, there were 464 fatal drug overdoses (excluding alcohol) in Clark County. Opioid-related overdoses and deaths continue to occur across the United States and the world. In an effort to acknowledge those deaths, the Southern Nevada Harm Reduction Alliance (SNHRA) is participating in its 3rd annual International Overdose Awareness Day, from 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., Thursday, August 29 at the Chuck Minker Sports Complex, 275 N. Mojave Rd., Las Vegas, NV 89101. The SNHRA will also offer overdose prevention trainings at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Participants will receive a free overdose prevention kit that contains nasal naloxone (Narcan®), the opioid overdose reversal medication, as well as community resources.
Health District reports potential hepatitis A exposure

Maryland Parkway, Las Vegas, NV 89109 (Maryland Parkway and Vegas Valley Drive) while they were potentially infectious to others.
Advisory: Nevada public health authorities recommend ceasing of e-cigarette, vaping product use
B2019-12-19T15:22:43-08:00Carson City Health and Human Services, Southern Nevada Health District, and Washoe County Health District are warning the public of the potential for severe lung illness associated with the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes). The public health authorities are advising people not to use vaping products and e-cigarettes. These products should never be used by youth, young adults, pregnant women, and people who do not currently use tobacco products.
Illness in Clark County resident linked to vaping
B2019-12-19T15:21:50-08:00The Southern Nevada Health District is reporting Clark County’s first confirmed case of severe respiratory illness linked to e-cigarette products in a person under the age of 18. The youth was hospitalized with respiratory symptoms that met the case definition established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A pulmonary infection has not been identified. The patient was released from the hospital and is recovering.

Health District offers flu vaccine for 2019-2020 flu season
B2019-10-01T10:16:38-07:00LAS VEGAS – Southern Nevadans may not be exchanging their summer attire for sweaters just yet, but the fall season is officially here, and that means it’s the perfect time for people to protect themselves and their families from the flu! The flu vaccine is available at the Southern Nevada Health District’s immunization clinics as well as community clinics and pharmacies throughout the valley. The Health District also offers flu vaccine specifically for people age 65 and older. Cost of the flu vaccine is covered by most insurance with no copay. Chief Health Officer announces retirement

Fourth vaping-related illness confirmed in Clark County

The individual is over the age of 18. The Health District previously reported cases in an individual under the age of 18 and two over the age of 18. The first case confirmed in Clark County was reported in September 2019. Up to date information on the outbreak is available on the CDC website.

November is American Diabetes Month
B2019-11-07T09:01:12-08:00LAS VEGAS – Ten percent of adults over the age of 20 in Clark County live with the realities of diabetes every day. For others, November is a time to bring awareness to one of the most prevalent diseases in the United States. During American Diabetes Month, the Southern Nevada Health District reminds people with diabetes, people at-risk for developing diabetes, and their families that self-management and prevention are keys to good health. The Health District’s Office of Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion offers diabetes self-management classes and a variety of resources. The Health District promotes its cessation resources in support of the Great American Smokeout

Thursday, Nov. 21, is the 42nd Great American Smokeout, and the Southern Nevada Health District has smoking cessation resources and tools, as well as information about alternative tobacco products, smoke-free living and smoke-free meeting spaces on its GetHealthyClarkCounty.org website to support those taking that first, second, or multiple attempts to quit.

A formal commitment to this process requires Southern Nevada’s mayors or elected jurisdictional officials to designate their municipalities as Fast-Track Cities by signing the Paris Declaration.

S. Decatur Blvd. The event will take place as the public health partners commemorate World AIDS Day.
‘Tis the season to be healthy!

As flu activity begins to increase around the holidays, the demand for flu vaccine typically decreases after November. National Influenza Vaccination Week, December 1-7, highlights the importance of getting vaccinated into December and even later. The Southern Nevada Health District offers the flu vaccine at its public health centers Monday through Friday. Fifth vaping-related illness confirmed in Clark County
B2019-12-19T15:13:57-08:00The Southern Nevada Health District has confirmed a fifth case of lung injury associated with e-cigarettes or vaping product use in a Clark County resident. The individual is over the age of 18. The five reported cases in Clark County include one individual under the age of 18 and two under the age of 20. The first case confirmed in Clark County was reported in September 2019.
Southern Nevada Health District Holiday Closures
B2019-12-18T09:18:22-08:00LAS VEGAS – All Southern Nevada Health District public health centers and clinics will be closed on Tuesday, Dec. 24, and Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2019, for the holidays. All locations will reopen at their regularly scheduled times on Thursday, Dec. 26. Additionally, all Health District locations will close at 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 31 and be closed on New Year’s Day. All services will resume on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020.
Nevadans Breathing in a Healthier New Year

During the 2019 legislative session, Nevada’s clean indoor air law was modernized to protect children and adults from secondhand aerosol from electronic vaping products in most public places and indoor places of employment.
