It’s American Heart Month

February is American Heart Month, and the Southern Nevada Health District is offering free blood pressure screenings from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at its main location, 280 S. Decatur Blvd. on Friday, February 2 and at its East Las Vegas Public Health Center, 570 N. Nellis Blvd on Friday, February 16.
Southern Nevada Health District offers free testing on National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

In 2014, among new HIV diagnoses in African Americans, only 72 percent of them were linked with medical care within one month. Wednesday, Feb. 7 marks the annual observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day to encourage African Americans to learn their HIV status.

Phillip Pilares2018-09-07T11:32:56-07:00The 2018 County Health Rankings, released today by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute (UWPHI), ranks Clark County as the 10th healthiest county in Nevada, down from 6th in last year’s ranking. The Southern Nevada Health District presented findings for Clark County at a community event today along with representatives from the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health and State Senator Pat Spearman.
BreakDown launches month long initiative on Kick Butts Day, March 21
Phillip Pilares2018-09-07T09:36:22-07:00In an effort to encourage colleges and universities to adopt smoke-free policies, the tobacco prevention youth group, BreakDown, will launch its month long initiative called “The Next Step” on Wednesday, March 21, to commemorate the annual Kick Butts Day observance. The Next Step is an effort to mobilize students at 10 local high schools to support smoke-free college and university campuses nationwide.
World TB Day, March 24

It is the date in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced he identified M. tuberculosis, the bacterium responsible for the disease.
April is STD Awareness Month
Phillip Pilares2018-09-11T10:20:16-07:00As rates of sexually transmitted diseases continue to remain high across the United States and in Clark County, the Southern Nevada Health District is partnering with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation during STD Awareness Month to offer testing for HIV and STDs through its mobile testing unit at locations throughout the valley. This year’s theme is “Treat Me Right,” a call for health care providers and patients to work together to foster more trusting relationships and more open communication to promote increased access to care, testing, diagnoses, and treatment.
Southern Nevada Health District opens Dental Health Clinic

Services will be provided by appointment only and available Mondays at the Health District’s Main Public Health Center and Wednesdays at its East Las Vegas Public Health Center.
Southern Nevada Health District enhances flu surveillance activities
Phillip Pilares2018-09-07T08:31:12-07:00Due to increased flu activity this season, the Southern Nevada Health District’s Office of Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance is working with the Health District’s Vital Records program and the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health to review and update previously reported cases of flu. Based on this review, the number of reported deaths for Clark County this season has been updated to 48.
Rob Phoenix of the Huntridge Family Clinic awarded Public Health Hero Award

Today, the Southern Nevada Health District recognized Phoenix for this service, and his partnership with its Office of Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance.
Southern Nevada Health District kicks off mosquito surveillance activities

This year, the Health District is kicking off its surveillance season with "Mosquito Monday," an event on Monday, May 14 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at 280 S. Decatur Blvd. to raise awareness of mosquito activity and to encourage the public to "Fight the Bite!"
National Hepatitis Testing Day is May 19

National Hepatitis Testing Day is an opportunity for the public to get tested. The Southern Nevada Health District is offering FREE hepatitis C testing on Friday, May 18 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. at its Mobile Health Clinic which will be at its main location at 280 S. National Healthy Homes Month

As part of the U.S. Department of Urban Development's (HUD) annual National Healthy Homes Month, the Southern Nevada Health District has collaborated with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and other community partners to raise awareness and reduce lead poisoning in children.

Health District updates Food Handler Safety Training Card program

Effective July 1, 2018, Food Handler Safety Training Card applicants will be required to complete testing at a Southern Nevada Health District location during business hours to obtain their cards.
Health District reports increase in heat-related deaths

Southern Nevada Health District investigating two cases of Legionnaires’ disease
Phillip Pilares2023-07-26T12:00:37-07:00The Southern Nevada Health District is investigating two cases of Legionnaires' disease reported in guests who stayed separately at Harrah's Laughlin Hotel & Casino in Laughlin, Nev., in November 2017 and March 2018. The hotel is assisting in the investigation, and the Health District is working with the property to notify current and past guests dating back to Oct. 15, 2017. Guests who stayed at Harrah's Laughlin Hotel & Casino during this timeframe and experienced symptoms up to 14 days after their stay can report their illness to the Health District using a survey posted on its website at www.snhd.info/survey2018.
Health District identifies first West Nile-positive mosquitoes of the season

United States citizens planning international travel can apply for their passports Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the Health District's main location at 280 S. Decatur Blvd., Las Vegas, NV, 89107. The Passport Office is co-located with the Birth and Death Certificate program.

Southern Nevada Health District increases access to care through expansion of services

Decatur Blvd. The Family Health Care Center will provide medical care for adults and children when they are sick, as well as preventive care services, including annual adult physicals and well-child check-ups for children up to 18 years of age.

The beginning of fall means that flu season is just around the corner, and the Southern Nevada Health District is offering the injectable quadrivalent (four-strain) flu vaccine as well as the high-dose vaccine for people age 65 and older at its public health centers. Health District, Southern Nevada HIV Awareness Consortium offer free HIV screenings for National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day

In the United States, Hispanics/Latinos accounted for approximately 26 percent of new HIV diagnoses in 2016 although they are only approximately 18 percent of the population. The testing event will take place from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 13 at Bonanza Plaza, 4250 E. Bonanza Rd., Las Vegas, NV. Public Health Update: Southern Nevada Health District reports first AFM case

The Health District will not be releasing identifying information related to individual cases of illness.
Health District to conduct neighborhood CASPER survey, Nov. 2-3
B2018-11-14T16:07:24-08:00On Friday, Nov. 2 and Saturday, Nov. 3, teams from the Southern Nevada Health District will begin interviewing household members in Las Vegas about how extreme heat impacts them and their families. These neighborhood surveys are part of the Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response (CASPER) technique to gather information to assist in emergency planning and response efforts. The goal of this CASPER survey is to understand how extreme heat affects Clark County residents and how local response agencies and Southern Nevadans can better prepare for such events. In 2017, the Health District reported 123 heat-related deaths among Clark County residents.
Health District encourages the public to report illegal dumping
B2018-11-14T16:10:28-08:00The Southern Nevada Health District is reporting that illegal dumping complaints increased by 28 percent in Clark County from 2016 to 2017. Complaints of material that have been illegally disposed of include trash, sewage, and hazardous material waste. In 2016, the Health District received 1,223 illegal dumping complaints, in 2017 the number of complaints increased to 1,575, and in 2018 the number of calls, emails, and information received through the Health District’s website has continued to increase.
November is American Diabetes Month
B2018-11-14T16:15:24-08:00In the United States, approximately 84 million people have prediabetes, and nine out of 10 of them do not know it. Prediabetes increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. During American Diabetes Month, the Southern Nevada Health District encourages everyone to take the prediabetes risk test, speak with a health care provider about their risks of developing the disease, and take steps to reverse prediabetes. The Health District and its community partners offer education, self-management classes, and support for people with diabetes and their families as well as programs that can help people lower their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The Health District promotes its cessation resources in support of the Great American Smokeout
B2018-11-14T16:19:07-08:00On Thursday, Nov. 15 many smokers will pledge to go smoke-free, even if it’s just for one day. The Great American Smokeout has provided an opportunity for smokers to commit to leading healthier lives for more than 40 years, and the Southern Nevada Health District has cessation resources, tools, and information to support them in their journey. The Great American Smokeout is an opportunity for smokers to kick the habit for at least one day with the hope that it could lead to a permanent change. The Health District encourages tobacco users to take up the one-day challenge that can lead to a long-term plan to quit for good. The Health District’s GetHealthyClarkCounty.org website has cessation resources as well as information about tobacco products, smoke-free living, and smoke-free meeting spaces.
World AIDS Day

Health District reports imported measles case
B2021-09-23T14:29:57-07:00The Southern Nevada Health District has confirmed an internationally imported case of measles in Southern Nevada. This is the first confirmed case of measles in Clark County since 2015. The patient is a previously vaccinated adult with a history of international travel. Appropriate testing confirmed the case on Monday, Dec. 24. The Health District is notifying individuals who might have had contact with this patient and will not be releasing any additional information about the patient.
