Southern Nevada Health District announces one patient under investigation for novel coronavirus

The Southern Nevada Health District announced today that it received a report of a potential case of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in a Clark County resident. The patient is currently in isolation at a local hospital. The patient will be monitored and under medical supervision while testing is conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Currently, there are no confirmed cases of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus in Clark County.

Clark County patient tests negative for novel coronavirus

The Southern Nevada Health District received notice today from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that a Clark County resident has tested negative for the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV). While waiting for the test results the patient’s symptoms had resolved and had remained isolated in compliance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance. The adult patient arrived into the United States from Wuhan, China on January 14 and sought medical care on January 28.

February is American Heart Month

February is American Heart Month, and the Southern Nevada Health District will provide free blood pressure screenings at its 280 S. Decatur Blvd. location on Friday, February 7, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Health District is also reminding Nevadans to take steps to protect their heart health by discussing their risks, such as high blood pressure, with their health care providers and learn how to reduce those risk factors.

The Southern Nevada Health District is announcing the first presumptive positive case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in a Clark County resident. Test results are considered “presumptive positive” until the result is confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The patient is a male in his 50s who is hospitalized and currently in airborne isolation.

The patient is a woman in her 70s who is currently hospitalized and in isolation. Two adults have been identified as close contacts of this individual and are being asked to self-quarantine for 14 days. The patient is reporting in-state travel prior to developing symptoms. All investigations are ongoing and additional information will be provided as it becomes available. Based on current information, close contacts of these individuals are being identified or have been notified and are following self-quarantine procedures. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines a close contact as someone who was within approximately 6 feet of a confirmed COVID-19 case for a prolonged period of time. Close contact can occur while caring for or living with someone. Health care workers who care for patients are also at higher risk.

The Southern Nevada Health District today announced three new presumptive positive COVID-19 cases. We’d like to reiterate and emphasize several points of information we feel are critical for the public: The risk of contracting COVID-19 in Southern Nevada remains low for the general public. There are four reported presumptive positive cases in our community, in addition to one confirmed by the CDC, in a population of roughly 2.2 million residents. There is presently no greater risk of contracting COVID-19 in Las Vegas or at The Mirage than there is at any other travel destination in the United States. Close contact is defined as being within six feet of someone who is symptomatic for a prolonged period of time. We are in the process of notifying anyone deemed to have been in close contact with any presumptive positive patients.

Client accessing homeless services tests positive for COVID-19

LAS VEGAS – The Southern Nevada Health District received a report of a positive case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in an individual who accessed services at Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada and the Homeless Courtyard operated by the City of Las Vegas. The client is a male who reported accessing services at these facilities while he was symptomatic. The individual is currently asymptomatic and no longer considered a risk of exposure to others.

The Health District’s Information Line is now available seven days a week, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at (702) 759-INFO (4636). There is currently no vaccine to protect against COVID-19 and no medications are approved to treat it. Social distancing has been shown to be effective in slowing the spread of disease. People should be staying home and following the directives put in place by Governor Steve Sisolak to limit public gatherings to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

The Southern Nevada Health District’s Daily Aggregate Reports have been revised to include rates. Today’s report also includes a revised estimate of recovered patients. The revised number is based on more accurate estimates of current hospitalizations after discovering the reporting system was inflating completed discharge dates in some instances.

LAS VEGAS – As Clark County’s COVID-19 case count began to climb, the Southern Nevada Health District expanded its staff of four disease investigators to more than 60 in six weeks. Today, as staff continues to work on case and contact notifications for the more than 5,400 reported cases in Clark County, the agency has implemented an automated system to expedite its efforts to notify people who have tested positive for COVID-19.

The Southern Nevada Health District recommends that people wear cloth face coverings in public, even more importantly in environments where social distancing is not always possible. As businesses are reopening, the Health District has issued guidance and recommendations that employees should wear non-hospital grade, cloth face coverings to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Everyone working is encouraged to wear a cloth face covering to protect customers when maintaining 6 feet of separation isn’t possible.

Public Health Update: Health District declares end to Hepatitis A Outbreak

The Health District first reported the hepatitis A outbreak in June 2019. Nevada was one of more than 30 states that experienced an outbreak of hepatitis A associated with person-to-person transmission since 2016. Through case investigation and contact tracing, it was determined the first case associated with the outbreak in Clark County developed symptoms in November 2018. Over the course of the outbreak, there were 107 outbreak-related cases, 94 hospitalizations, and one death.

Southern Nevada Health District reports two additional confirmed case of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in children associated with COVID-19

LAS VEGAS – The Southern Nevada Health District is reporting two additional cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) in Clark County. Both patients tested positive for COVID-19 and required hospitalization but have been discharged and are recovering. The Health District reported the first confirmed case of MIS-C associated with COVID-19 in a child on June 12.

Fentanyl deaths increasing in Clark County

LAS VEGAS – According to data released by the Southern Nevada Health District, deaths involving fentanyl or fentanyl analogs (drugs designed to mimic the pharmacological effects of fentanyl) are increasing in Clark County. To date, there have been 63 deaths involving fentanyl among Clark County residents this year. In 2019, there were 28 deaths during the same time, an increase of 125%. There were 64 fentanyl deaths in 2019 and 46 deaths in 2018.

Today, the Southern Nevada Health District is reporting 51,457 cases of COVID-19 in Clark County, an increase of 888 since yesterday. It is important to note that the case counts posted each day are a reflection of the volume of tests conducted and electronic laboratory results received by the Health District from reporting facilities. The event is an opportunity to acknowledge the loss of friends and loved ones to fatal drug overdoses and will include a panel discussion with community members to discuss their overdose-related experiences. Today, the Southern Nevada Health District reported 63,301 cases of COVID-19 in Clark County, an increase of 224 cases since yesterday. The Health District is adding a series of new weekly city reports that will be posted each Thursday to its website. The reports will provide more specific data for the jurisdictions of Boulder City, Henderson, Las Vegas, Mesquite, and North Las Vegas. Reports for smaller jurisdictions are not provided based on lower cases counts or population size.

Neighborhood COVID-19 Test Sites Available Beginning Sept. 24

Additional community-based COVID-19 testing sites are scheduled to open in the city of Las Vegas beginning Thursday Sept. 24. The hours for these new locations will be 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the first site at Clark High School, 4291 Pennwood Ave., open Sept. 24-25. The testing will be at the school’s auxiliary gymnasium off Sirius Avenue. In addition, a site at Western High School, 4601 W. Bonanza Road, is scheduled to be open Oct. 8-9, and a site at Cimarron-Memorial High School, 2301 N. Tenaya Way, is scheduled for Oct. 15-16

Food Handler Safety Training Card services will resume at Health District locations

The Southern Nevada Health District’s Food Handler Safety Training Card program will resume operations for first-time clients on Monday, Sept. 28, 2020. Services will be available by appointment only. First-time food handler safety training card applicants can make an appointment by calling (702) 759-0595. New card applicants will have until Dec. 31, 2020, to obtain their card. Food facilities will not receive demerits if a first-time applicant is working without a card at this time.

LAS VEGAS – The Southern Nevada Health District and the City of Henderson are teaming up to host an appointment-based, no-cost, drive-up flu vaccine clinic at the Fiesta Henderson Hotel and Casino parking garage. Registration is available at www.bit.ly/oct6flu. Drive-up and walk-up clients without appointments will be accommodated if vaccine supplies allow. The drive-up clinic will offer 400 doses of vaccine for adults.

LAS VEGAS – As the community starts to prepare for Halloween, the Southern Nevada Health District is issuing tips to help plan for a safer and healthier holiday season. Celebrations with members of the same household or holding virtual parties pose the lowest risk for spreading viruses. People who are at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19, or who live with someone who is at increased risk, should avoid in-person gatherings and consider participating in lower risk events with people who live in the same household.

The Southern Nevada Health District is reporting 609 new cases of COVID-19 today, bringing the total of cases in Clark County to 77,426. The Health District is also reporting six new COVID-19 deaths; however, the total number of deaths reported today remains at 1,488. Based on the new COVID-19 surveillance death definition finalized by the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services and current as of October 19, 2020, the Health District reviewed its previously reported data and the total number of deaths reported in Clark County was decreased by six.

Today, the Southern Nevada Health District is reporting 1,032 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases in Clark County to 86,673. The Health District is also reporting a total of 1,564 COVID-19 deaths, an increase of 17. The number of deaths reported today includes 17 deaths that were previously reported to the state but had not yet been submitted to the Health District, and therefore not included in our local COVID-19 reports. These deaths occurred between May 30, 2020, and September 19, 2020. Today’s total also reflects a decrease of five previously reported deaths that were found not to be residents of Clark County. These adjustments are being made in keeping with the recently reviewed COVID-19 surveillance death definition finalized by the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services on October 19, 2020, and in partnership with the state to review and reconcile reports

Southern Nevada Health District COVID-19 Update – Large Events Planning

LAS VEGAS – The Health District has developed a set of parameters for making its recommendations for the approval of large events in Clark County that is available on its website. Today, public health indicators are trending toward surveillance capacity because the 7-day average number of new cases is 569. The Health District recommends that events with less than 1,000 attendees can move forward for possible approval by the appropriate state agency with the caveat that these events could be postponed or canceled if conditions deteriorate. Under this condition, the Health District does not recommend approval for events of more than 1,000 attendees until three consecutive days of all parameters are found to be in green, not trending toward surveillance capacity or yellow, trending toward surveillance capacity. Large gathering plans are ultimately approved by the Division of Industrial Relations, after review by the Health District and other local jurisdictions.

No-Cost Saturday Flu Clinic offered for Southern Nevadans

The Southern Nevada Health District has scheduled an additional no-cost flu clinic on Saturday, November 21, at Eldorado High School making it more convenient for Clark County residents to “Show Flu Who’s Boss” as they head into the holiday season. Vaccine is available for both adults and children 6 months of age and older on a first-come, first-served basis, and no appointments are necessary.

The holiday season is here, and the Southern Nevada Health District is encouraging everyone to plan safe and healthy celebrations with their families. To remind everyone of the basic preventive measures they can take, the Health District is launching its “Mask Up. Back Up. Wash Up.” campaign. The informational campaign urges Southern Nevadans to step up to bring COVID down by wearing face coverings when they do have to be in public or around people who don’t live in the same household, maintaining physical distance of at least 6 feet, and washing hands frequently.

Health District receives first Moderna vaccine shipment

LAS VEGAS – Today, the Southern Nevada Health District received its first shipment of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. This first shipment includes 15,000 doses of the vaccine. Most of this shipment will be used by the Health District to administer vaccine to Tier 1 health care personnel. The Health District continues to receive vaccine in phases. To date, the Southern Nevada Health District has received 27,675 doses of COVID-19 vaccine in addition to 16, 478 doses of Moderna vaccine being shipped directly to Clark County hospitals this week.
