FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
April 19, 2022
LAS VEGAS — April is National Minority Health Month, an opportunity to support minority health initiatives, increase access to resources, and decrease health inequities. As part of its mission of ensuring a Healthy Southern Nevada, the Southern Nevada Health District has developed and implemented several programs and resources to reduce health disparities in the community.
“At the Southern Nevada Health District, we continue to seek out ways to reduce health disparities in our community by looking through the lens of health inequities to develop programs and work with our community partners so that we can meet the needs of our patients and clients,” said Dr. Fermin Leguen, District Health Officer for the Southern Nevada Health District.
The Health District implemented its Barber Shop (BSHOP) and Beauty Salon (BeSHOP) health outreach programs to encourage Black and African-American men and women to increase their awareness and take proactive steps to reduce their risks for heart disease and stroke. The Health District partnered with 10 Black-owned barbershops and two beauty salons located in high-risk communities. Community health workers and volunteers visit the shops monthly to provide blood pressure screenings and educational information as well as make direct referrals to clients who do not have primary care services. The program has surpassed its annual goal of screening at least 175 individuals. For more information and resources about how individuals can manage health risks, and information about the barber shop and beauty shop initiatives, visit Get Healthy Clark County Million Hearts page.
The Health District also recently partnered with All Saints Episcopal Church, 4301 W. Washington Ave., Las Vegas, 89107 to provide sexual health clinic services each Monday through Wednesday at the church. Launched on World AIDS Day 2021, the clinic creates a safe, welcoming and non-traditional location for the community to seek treatment and preventive sexual health services. All Saints Episcopal Church reaches out to the LGBTQ community, people who are experiencing homelessness, and young people for testing and treatment. To find out more about the sexual health clinic at All Saints Episcopal Church visit the Health District’s Sexual Health Clinic page or call (702) 759-1700.
