Health District hosts Teen Pregnancy Prevention Forum

LAS VEGAS – The Southern Nevada Health District Teen Pregnancy Prevention Forum begins this morning at the Springs Preserve, 333 S. Valley View Blvd. The forum is designed to highlight the health district’s Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program’s activities and accomplishments of the last five years.

The Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program promotes safer sex and reproductive health practices to reduce unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections in adolescents 13-19 years of age by providing health education and community outreach programs. The program is funded through a grant from the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Adolescent Health.

The Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program recently received a new grant award and will be working with targeted communities in identified high risk zip codes in Las Vegas and North Las Vegas with teen pregnancy rates higher than the national average. The program was one of 60 to receive an award out of 400 applicants nationwide.

Southern Nevada community leaders have been invited to attend the event and speakers will include:

“Go on or Go Home? A Prescription for Continuing the Nation’s Progress in Preventing Teen Pregnancy”

Phyllida Burlingame, Policy Director for Reproductive Justice for the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina
“Reproductive Justice in Schools Promoting Comprehensive Sex Education and Equity for Parenting Students”
