Infection Control Breach at Physician’s Office
A joint investigation conducted by the Board of Medical Examiners and the Food and Drug Administration Office of Criminal Investigation found Dr. Michael Kaplan reused endocavity needle guides, which are single-use-only medical devices.
The Southern Nevada Health District is coordinating with the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners to identify patients who underwent prostate biopsies, VISICOIL™ implantable markers or gold seed radiation implants between December 20, 2010 and March 11, 2011.
The health district has not identified any cases of disease related to this investigation. However, as a precaution we recommend any patient who underwent any of the above procedures at Dr. Kaplan’s office during this timeframe be tested for hepatitis C, hepatitis B and HIV.
