The Hepatitis C Investigation in 2008 illustrates the importance of continued training about safe injection practices.
Since 1999, more than 125,000 patients in the United States have been notified of potential exposure to hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and HIV due to lapses in basic infection control practices.
Many of these lapses involved health care providers reusing syringes, resulting in contamination of medication vials or containers which were used then on subsequent patients.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has restated its position on the use of single-dose/single-use vials and seeks to dispel inaccuracies being disseminated to health care providers. Download the Single-dose/Single-use Vial Position and Messages PDF 118KB for details.
The One & Only Campaign
The One & Only Campaign is a public health campaign, led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Safe Injection Practices Coalition (SIPC), to raise awareness among patients and health care providers about safe injection practices.
The goal of the One & Only Campaign is to ensure that every injection administered to patients is safe. The Campaign aims to empower patients to ask questions and re-educate health care providers regarding safe injection practices.
The Safe Injection Practices video for healthcare providers is designed to remind health care providers to consistently utilize basic, evidence-based, common sense precautions to protect patients and themselves.
