H1N1 Influenza

The Southern Nevada Health District reports the following information for the week ending Saturday, April 3, 2010. This is the last scheduled influenza surveillance report of the 2009-2010 influenza surveillance season. A final summary report for the season will be released in May.

Although enhanced influenza surveillance, including investigation of hospitalizations and deaths, has concluded, the health district will continue to conduct enhanced pediatric laboratory surveillance for influenza throughout the year. In addition laboratory-confirmed cases are reportable to the health district throughout the year.

In 2009, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) initiated its enhanced surveillance data collection program with the emergence of the novel 2009 H1N1 influenza virus. As of Saturday, April 3, the CDC’s enhanced surveillance data collection program concluded.

Clark County 2009 H1N1-related deaths since spring 2009: 40**

For the week ending Saturday, April 3, the health district is reporting one additional death in a patient following a lengthy illness. The patient is a 10-year-old boy with underlying medical conditions.

To date, the health district has received 172,000 doses of the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine, some of which has been distributed to private providers. Approximately 379,000 doses have been delivered to private providers in Clark County by the Nevada State Health Division. The Southern Nevada Health District has administered more than 133,400 doses since October.

*Cumulative totals may not add up to the current week total plus the cumulative total from the previous week, as cases from previous weeks can be reclassified from influenza to novel H1N1 based on new lab results, and duplicates are identified and removed.

**This number represents Clark County residents only and is cumulative since 2009 H1N1 influenza was identified in the spring. In early June, the health district reported the death of a hospitalized patient who was a resident of another state.
