Still time to visit back-to-school immunization clinics

Health District offers school shots year-round

LAS VEGAS – The Southern Nevada Health District provides back-to-school immunizations at its public health centers year round. Early August is an excellent time to bring in pre-schoolers, kindergartners, and 7th graders for their mandatory vaccinations. Parents should bring immunization records. Children with no records might have to begin the immunization sequence from the beginning. Non-custodial adults may accompany a child, however, written consent must be provided to the health district from the parent or guardian at the time of service. An administrative fee of $16 per child for one immunization or $25 per child for two or more immunizations will be collected. Additional vaccines fees might apply.

The health district will offer extended hours for back-to-school immunizations the last two weeks of August. Immunizations are available at the following locations:

• Main Public Health Center, 330 S. Valley View Blvd.
  Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  Extended hours: Monday, Aug. 12-Friday, Aug. 16 open until 6 p.m.
  Extended hours: Monday, Aug. 19-Friday, Aug. 23 open until 6 p.m.
  No other health district services available after 4:30 p.m.
• East Las Vegas Public Health Center, 560 N. Nellis Blvd., Suite E12, Las Vegas
  Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
  Immunization clinic for school immunizations only: Friday, Aug. 23 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
• Henderson Public Health Center, 520 E. Lake Mead Parkway, Henderson
  Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
  Immunization clinic for school immunizations only: Friday, Aug. 23 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
• North Las Vegas Public Health Center, 955 W. Craig Rd., Suite 103D, North Las Vegas
  Monday – Friday, 8a.m. – 12:30 p.m., 1:15 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
• Mesquite Public Health Center, 830 Hafen Lane, Mesquite
  Tuesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. – noon, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

A back-to-school immunization clinic will be held in Laughlin for Nevada residents only, 10 a.m. – 2p.m., Friday, Aug. 9, 3080 S. Needles Highway, Suite, 1800.

In addition, the health district will offer back-to-school immunizations at area malls: Sat., Aug. 10, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Meadows Mall, 4300 Meadows Lane; Sat., Aug. 17, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Boulevard Mall, 3528 S. Maryland Parkway; Sat., Aug. 24, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Galleria at Sunset, 1300 W. Sunset Road.

Nevada state law requires the following vaccinations for students enrolling in the Clark County School District or private school: chickenpox (varicella); hepatitis A; hepatitis B; polio; tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis (Tdap); and measles-mumps-rubella (MMR). Parents who have recently moved to Nevada should note the chickenpox and hepatitis A vaccinations are not required in all states, so immunizations that were up-to-date in other states might not be current in Nevada. The health district also suggests a second dose of the chickenpox vaccine for school-age children as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Children entering any Nevada school for the first time, including those in the Clark County School District, are now required to have a second dose of the chickenpox vaccine and a fourth dose of polio vaccine no matter what grade they are entering. If the fourth dose of polio vaccine is given BEFORE the child’s fourth birthday, it is invalid for school admission.

Children entering seventh grade must be immunized against Bordetella pertussis. The health district provides the Tdap (tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis) vaccine to meet the mandate. College freshmen younger than 24 years old who will live in on-campus housing at a Nevada college or university are required to receive the Neisseria meningiditis (Meningococcus) vaccine.
