Health District addresses the burden of cardiovascular disease among Black men

June is Men’s Health Month

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
June 15, 2022

LAS VEGAS – As part of Men’s Health Month, the Southern Nevada Health District, in partnership with the Barbershop Health Outreach Project (BSHOP), is hosting an event called Shop Talk from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., Thursday, June 16, at Masterpiece Barber School, 3510 E. Bonanza Rd., Las Vegas, NV, 89110. The event is free; however, space is limited. To register, visit Get Healthy Clark County Shop Talk. Men’s Health Month seeks to raise awareness about health care for men and encourage them, their sons, and their families to learn about and implement healthy life choices.

Shop Talk will include a panel of experts who will discuss health and wellness with a focus on men and their families, including:

  • How to lower the risk for heart disease and stroke.
  • How to control and manage blood pressure.
  • How stress is a contributing factor.
  • How mental health challenges impact heart health.
  • How distrust in the health care system can impact preventive health care.
  • How physical activity and nutrition improve heart health.

Men’s Health Month is an opportunity to encourage men to seek out routine health care. Early detection and treatment for chronic medical conditions can identify issues early and reduce long-term health risks.

According to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health as well the Men’s Health Network:

  • Men die five years earlier than women, on average.
  • Men have a higher death rate for most leading causes of death including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and suicide.
  • Men are less likely than women to seek help for depression; they are four times as likely to commit suicide.
  • 44 percent of Black men are diagnosed with some form of heart disease.
  • Men make half as many doctor visits for preventive care as women.
  • Men are more likely to be uninsured compared to women.

As part of the Barbershop Health Outreach Project, free blood pressure checks, education, and referrals are available at the following locations during June:
