LAS VEGAS – The Slam Dunk Health Challenge, a program that encourages students to eat healthy foods and participate in physical activities, culminates Wednesday, May 15, at 10:45 a.m. at Howard Wasden Elementary School, 2831 Palomino Ln., Las Vegas, NV 89107, when this year’s top classroom – led by fourth-grade teacher Karma Reyes – will be awarded the grand prize. Las Vegas Aces player Sydney Colson will visit the winning classroom to congratulate the students and encourage them to stay on their path of making healthy choices.

Now in its fifth year, the Slam Dunk Health Challenge is a joint effort by the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD), the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces and the Clark County School District (CCSD). Participating teachers and students earned points during the four-week program by eating fruits and vegetables and being physically active, while learning the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

This year, more than 16,400 students from 667 classrooms in 101 CCSD elementary schools participated in the program, which is open to all CCSD students in first- through fifth-grade classrooms. The program includes resources for teachers, including lesson plans and activities and weekly video segments featuring Las Vegas Aces players urging students to eat healthy, stay active and track their progress.
