Southern Nevada Health District and Clark County officials provided a COVID-19 update today. The community is at a critical time in its response to the pandemic. As the Health District and its partners transition to local control, continued vaccination efforts and other recommended prevention strategies are integral to the efforts to stop the pandemic.

Officials urged all eligible people to continue to get vaccinated. Once 60 percent of the county’s eligible population has received one dose of the vaccine, social distancing and capacity restrictions will be removed based on the local mitigation plan. The Health District and Clark County had previously announced the Cashman Center site would be closing on May 5 as the strategies for vaccine outreach shifted. The large-scale sites allowed for the effective use of available resources to meet the initial demand of the vaccine. Moving forward, the Health District and its partners will be using strike teams and venues to increase access to more people in the community.

Additional updates:

• As of April 22, 2021, there have been 829,788 COVID-19 doses initiated, 562,485 doses completed, and a total of 1,338,717 COVID-19 vaccines administered in Clark County.
• To date, approximately 45 percent of Clark County’s eligible population (people 16 years of age and older) have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
• As of April 22, the Health District is reporting a total of 73 breakthrough infection cases among completely vaccinated residents in Clark County. This represents approximately 1 out of 10,000 people vaccinated.
• Given the large number of people being vaccinated in the United States and the high level of ongoing COVID-19 cases, thousands of symptomatic vaccine breakthrough cases are expected, even if the vaccines remain as effective as demonstrated during the clinical trials.
• The Health District asks newly identified cases about their vaccination status and these individuals self-report their status to disease investigators.
• Breakthrough cases can occur because a person was infected before they were vaccinated or just after vaccination. It takes about two weeks for the body to develop protection.

• During the first week of May, Health District COVID-19 vaccine operations at its Decatur location will move from its current location in the main immunization clinic to the building that housed its non-congregate shelter. This will allow the immunization clinic to resume its normal clinic duties, including back-to-school immunizations as parents and children get ready for the start of the new school year and in-person instruction.
• Today, the Health District is reporting 241,814 cases of COVID-19 in Clark County, an increase of 461 since yesterday. The Health District is also reporting 4,261 deaths, an increase in 22 from yesterday.
