FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
August 7, 2023

LAS VEGAS – “Uniting the pillars of community response to substance abuse” is the theme of the 4th annual Southern Nevada Substance Misuse and Overdose Prevention Summit (SNSMOPS), set for August 10, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Red Rock Casino and Spa in Las Vegas.

The event is coordinated by the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) in collaboration with the PACT Coalition, Opioid Response Network, Nevada High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas, Center for the Application of Substance Abuse Technologies and other organizations.

Participants in the summit will discuss ways of advancing the prevention, rescue, treatment and recovery pillars of substance use and overdose. The overarching goal of the summit is to “help create a healthier, compassionate community that supports individuals and their families who live, work and play within it.”

The summit’s keynote speaker is Jason Anderson, senior trainer with the Montana Institute. Anderson will discuss the “Science of the Positive” approach to prevention, described as an inclusive, non-shaming approach that focuses on identifying and growing protective factors. Other speakers will include representatives of SNHD, Eighth Judicial District Court of Nevada, Foundation for Recovery, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the EMPOWERED Program.

The summit will also include SHIELD, a training opportunity for law enforcement and other first responders for their work at the front lines of the overdose crisis. The SHIELD training initiative aims to reduce stress, burnout and accidental needle stick injuries among first responders while improving community health.
