Public health detailing is an interactive educational approach tailored to medical providers and community health partners to provide unbiased, noncommercial, evidence-based information about public health topics that impact you, your clinic, and your patients’ quality of life.

Each public health detailing visit is a brief virtual or in-person conversation that is customized for you and your practice. Receive up-to-date information and best practices about cutting-edge public health topics. These visits are available at no cost to you, and free promotional materials will be provided to you and your clinic.

As part of our support to healthcare providers and health systems, we are excited to offer public health detailing to our community at no cost to you or your practice in the following areas:

While medical providers and laboratories are required by Nevada Revised Statutes to report specific disease and conditions as well as any treatment to the local health authority within 24 hours, the specific information required and processes of reporting may be challenging to medical providers and their care team. Contact us for information on morbidity reporting practices and much more.

Nevada has consistently had some of the highest rates of congenital syphilis in the United States. Recently Nevada law was changed to add chlamydia, gonorrhea, and hepatitis B and C to prenatal screening requirements, as well as to specify times for syphilis screening in the first and third trimesters.

Nevada has the highest rate (16.6 per 100,000) of new HIV infections in the western United States, and Clark County has a new HIV infection rate that is higher than the overall state rate. Biomedical interventions involve prescribing extremely effective medications to prevent individuals from acquiring HIV. In Nevada, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) have recently been approved to be prescribed not only by medical providers but through pharmacies as well.

We are not doing this kind of detailing at the moment.

Consistent and correct condom use has been shown to be an effective method to prevent HIV and other STIs. Many in our community are unaware that free condoms are available at a variety of community-based organizations. Beginning in 2023, condoms can be prescribed through a medical provider’s order and reimbursed through Medicaid, health savings accounts or health reimbursement accounts.

Creating an environment in which clients/patients feel safe to talk about their sexual health and behavior without feeling stigmatized or judged is essential to creating an opportunity for HIV/STI risk reduction education and counseling. Conversations about sexual health also provide a more complete assessment of patients’ overall health and well-being. A sexual history allows providers to identity individuals at risk for HIV/STIs, appropriate sites for certain STI tests, explore a client’s reproductive health and interest in parenting, identify a history of sexual, physical, or emotional violence, as well as experiences with substance use and sexuality.

The Health District is here to provide support health care providers and health systems with drug overdose prevention and response, including expanding the use of evidence-based prescribing and treatment practices. As part of this initiative, we are encouraging health care providers to:

  • Screen patients for opioid effectiveness using the PEG screening tool
  • Taper opioid prescriptions that are found to be ineffective
  • Explore alternate ways of treating patients’ chronic non-cancer pain
